Electrician in Colyton

Our family has been carrying out electrical work across East Devon since 1979, and although the business started in Seaton, Colyton has been home for many years. I attended Colyton Grammar School, following in my father’s footsteps, and our family moved to Colyton in 1994. I’ve now been an electrician for 28 years and continue to work on homes and businesses throughout the town.

Over the years I’ve worked on everything from older cottages and Georgian townhouses to bungalows, converted barns and modern family homes. Every property is different, but understanding the age of a building and the way it’s been altered over time often gives you a good indication of the sort of electrical work you’re likely to find.

Electrical work we’ve recently completed in Colyton

Your Local Electrician in Colyton - Tyne Electrical Services

Recent work has included an Ohme Home Pro EV charger installation on Westaway Road, an Electrical Installation Condition Report followed by a consumer unit replacement on Burnards Field Close, a full rewire on Dolphin Street and smaller electrical repairs in The Butts.

Although every job is different, they all start in exactly the same way. We take the time to properly assess the existing installation before recommending any work. Sometimes the answer is a straightforward repair, while other times replacing equipment is the safest and most cost-effective option. Whatever we recommend, we’ll always explain why in plain English, so you can make an informed decision.

The EV charger installation on Westaway Road is a good example. Before any charger is installed, we assess the existing electrical installation to make sure it’s suitable for the additional load. On this property, the age and limited capacity of the existing consumer unit meant it wasn’t appropriate to add another circuit, so we installed a dedicated EV consumer unit to supply the charger. A new dedicated circuit was then installed to the Ohme Home Pro before the installation was fully inspected and tested, the appropriate certification issued and the required Distribution Network Operator notification completed.

On Burnards Field Close, we first carried out an Electrical Installation Condition Report before replacing the existing consumer unit. Inspecting and testing the installation beforehand meant we understood the condition of the existing circuits before connecting the new consumer unit, allowing any underlying issues to be identified rather than simply replacing the board and hoping everything else was satisfactory.

The types of properties we work on in Colyton

One thing I’ve learnt over the years is that you can often predict the sort of electrical work you’ll find simply by knowing where the property is.

The older cottages and Georgian properties around the town centre often have decades of alterations hidden beneath floorboards and within loft spaces. It’s not unusual to find redundant wiring, older consumer units or electrical work that’s been extended several times over the years.

The more modern developments, including areas such as Burnards Field Close, are increasingly seeing homeowners install EV chargers, upgrade consumer units, improve outdoor lighting and add additional sockets to suit modern living.

Outside the town itself, we also regularly work on farmhouses, converted barns and rural properties where long cable runs, detached outbuildings and ageing electrical installations often require a different approach to newer housing estates.

Common electrical problems we find in Colyton homes

Working on properties throughout Colyton, there are a few issues we regularly come across.

Older homes often have electrical installations that have been altered several times over the years. Extensions, replacement kitchens and DIY improvements can leave wiring that’s difficult to follow without proper testing.

We also still come across plenty of older Wylex consumer units. Their age alone doesn’t automatically make them unsafe, but many lack the RCD, RCBO and surge protection expected from a modern installation. Rather than recommending replacement simply because a board is old, we’ll assess the condition of the whole installation and explain whether an upgrade is genuinely worthwhile.

Damp can also be a common cause of electrical faults, particularly in older cottages, garages and outbuildings, while outdoor electrical accessories naturally deteriorate over time if exposed to the elements.

Why homeowners in Colyton choose Tyne Electrical Services

We believe great electrical work is about more than technical ability. It’s about making the whole experience straightforward from your first enquiry through to the final certificate.

Whether you contact us by phone or complete our online enquiry form, Shakira in our office will usually be the first person you deal with. She’ll ask a few questions about the work you need, arrange a convenient appointment and keep you updated throughout.

On the day of your appointment, you’ll receive a notification when we’re on our way and can even track our arrival, so you’re not left wondering when the electrician will turn up.

Once we’re with you, we’ll explain what we’ve found in plain English, discuss the available options and provide honest advice. We won’t recommend work that isn’t needed, but equally we won’t cut corners simply to provide the cheapest quote.

Every job is carried out carefully, tested thoroughly and certified where required. We also take pride in leaving every property clean and tidy once we’ve finished.

Our customers regularly comment on our professionalism, communication, reliability and attention to detail. We’re proud to have built up more than 80 Google reviews and over 90 Checkatrade reviews by consistently delivering high-quality workmanship and excellent customer service.

What to expect when you contact us

The easiest way to get in touch is by completing our online enquiry form. Tell us a little about the work you need and, if helpful, upload a few photographs. This often allows us to provide advice or a fixed-price quotation before we even visit your property.

If a site visit is needed, we’ll arrange a convenient appointment and keep you informed throughout. You’ll receive confirmation of your booking, a notification when we’re travelling to you and, once the work has been completed, the appropriate certification together with a clear explanation of anything we’ve found or any recommendations we have.

If you’d rather speak to someone, you’re always welcome to give us a call.

Our aim is simple: provide honest advice, high-quality workmanship and a service that makes dealing with an electrician as straightforward as possible.

Although electrical work has changed enormously since my father started the business in 1979, the principles haven’t. Treat people honestly, turn up when you say you will, do the job properly and stand behind your work. Those are the values Tyne Electrical Services was built on, and they’re still the values we work by today.
